The Red-spotted Beaked Snake belongs to the Psammophiidae family, sand & grass snakes. Fast, slender, day-active snakes of open country.

Psammophiids are alert, fast-moving snakes of grasslands and deserts, including the sand racers and the Montpellier snakes. Many are rear-fanged. They often raise the head to scan for prey and can move at surprising speed.

Its genus, Rhamphiophis, covers beaked snakes. African sand snakes with a hooked, shovel-like snout built for digging out prey on dry ground.

The Red-spotted Beaked Snake is non-venomous and harmless to people. Like most snakes it is a quiet predator that helps keep rodents and other small prey in check.
